He planted a Zen garden, a tea house, a bamboo grove and all the usual Japanese elements, including a moss garden and stream.
Aged 18, he grew bonsai in London, then moved to Cornwall and started a bonsai nursery. This approach is echoed by Robert Hore, who started the Japanese Garden in St Mawgan Village near Newquay in Cornwall 20 years ago in a lush, shady valley laced with running water. I even replicated a verdant landscape in miniature in a tiny moss garden that I kept in my bathroom for a while. Nowadays at Chelsea, I always head first to the Artisan gardens for Ishihara Kazuyuki’s jewel-like moss scapes I follow and on Instagram and I now see moss everywhere. I may even have admired the little hummocks that dropped down from my roof, but then a walk in local woods one cold damp winter’s afternoon hooked me on the beauty of the soft, deep, green moss-covered banks and boughs. True, I might give it a passing thought as I raked my lawn I appreciated it as I covered the base of potted bulbs and even blessed it as I lined my hens’ nestboxes so they could lay their eggs snug and warm. Until a couple of years ago, I never really studied moss.
